riding horseback 40 miles will get you down to bakersville
sleep under the stars at night
early to bed
early to rise
when in town you’re finally in
it’s the big blue house with the cotton gin
the ground gets dry when the sun gets high
early to bed
early to rise
early to bed
early to rise

another career for the master of none
another souvenir for the yard sale
note to self on the back of my hand
i wasn’t listening
what was the question
guilt rides like a jockey
reels you in when you get bold
has you chomping at the bit
looking over your shoulder
in the blink of an eye another war has begun
another career for the master of none
with a twist to the left i loosen the cap on the neck
‘cause i don’t have the answers
and i’m willing to bet you don’t either
so what are we left with
so you lied about making the grade
and you’re pulling your hair out
suffering for art that no one should make
and there’s that voice again telling me i should’ve gone fishing
another career for the master of none
another career for the master of none

come in get dry come on inside
come in get dry come on inside
honesty aside i think it’s very nice how you arrive at work on time
come in get dry come on inside
come in get dry
the hive is alive
assembly lines
the trinkets float on by
you can pass the time folding staples in the shape of a landmine
come get your bible
it’s just up there on the tv
come in get dry come on inside
the week had passed I was home at last it was late
i had some cash and you passed that ass to me
like a good young lady
then i wrote this song and it all went wrong
when your hair turned white the christian right started looking better all the time
and now you get by on prayers and quiet alone time
you gave me what you had
took what i could use
but i never reached your mind after all this time
if you need a bible the gideons left one in the drawer
come in get dry come on inside

you could be false no longer
it seemed the excitement had died
he was building many things with a wing on either
side
and none of them could fly
it melts beneath you tongue like flavor ice in the high
school summer time
but there’s no life left in that story line
beth what do you think it is that makes you love the
sweetest tastes
the candle’s crawling down the table
i think it’s time to say 'good night'
as i seal this envelope i hope you’re sleeping tight
with the way and the truth and the life
make sure you keep that golden ring around your head
i’ve heard it said there’s someone who’s supposed to
be coming
you may find your answer yet
it will come when you least expect it

forgiven of sin and destined to win
it’s getting late and i’m out again singing "auld lang syne"
the party is leaving but i’ll go around one more time
we all been down at the windmill lounge
peepin’ at hoes with a glimmer of hope
forgiven of sin
destined to win
i am the man
my cough is distinguished
my posture has slackened
and i’ll make promises and do like i always do
and then with stars in my eyes i’ll return more or less on time
we was all down at the windmill lounge
searching for a soul in the billowing smoke
destined to win
forgiven of sin
i am the man

stars at night criss across the sky
if you got nothin’ to do you can watch the clouds roll
by
step brother i was just thinkin’ out loud and there ain’t
no end in sight
whatcha doin’ tonight
small town hype to waste away your daylight
since you’ve got nothin’ to loose I guess it’s justified
step brother won’t you come on by ‘cause i got some
doob and some high life
and that’s a good time
if you see step brother won’t you tell him to come on
by
i hope all is forgiven
‘cause one more eye for an eye and i’ll be blind

what you’re lookin’ for ain’t there
back in the day i knew a thug called stephen j.
'they was on to me', he said
1222 trout avenue
that was his place
the kind the dogs don’t come inside
'get ‘em outta here', he said
there were these black holes in his eyes
and i never reached his mind
'you already know too much'
did you ever meet stephen j.
he knew when to stare and he knew when to look away
'they was on to me', he said
man have you seen stephen j.
takes vitamin c and hopes the mormons don’t come his way
'they was watchin’ me', he said
whatcha lookin’ for ain’t there
there were these black holes in his eyes
and i never reached his mind
'you already know too much'

someone’s finger was in the moment
scalloped edbges are turnin’ brown
but you can see how we were laughin’
joey’s drunk ass fallin’ on the ground
that’s mark there on the right
that’s jimmy on the left
it’s suitable for framing but that picture’s just lyin’
around
with some spare change and some toothpicks on the
nightstand

awaiting further instruction
a small suggestion from a voice of direction
and away we go
never asking why
don't forget to wave as we pull out of the driveway
wrapped in flags we're unexposed
showing jesus so he knows we're on his side
wrapped in flags from head to toe
safe inside, sticking close to our own kind
we can rest our heads at night
we can multiply and divide
it's just like day into night
it comes so easy
awaiting final destruction
while our voice of direction leads us on to perfection
now that we all know
and we've found the light
we won't forget to pray for the
godless and the blind
wrapped in flags we're unexposed
showing jesus so he knows we're on
his side
we will fall in line
divide and multiply
it's just like day into night
it comes so easy
